Technology Adoption and Growth Dynamics
نویسنده
چکیده
We study the lags with which new technologies are adopted across countries, and their penetration rates once they are adopted. Using data from the last two centuries, we estimate both the extensive and the intensive margins of technology adoption. We document two new facts: there has been convergence in adoption lags between rich and poor countries, while there has been divergence in penetration rates. Using a model of adoption and growth, we show that these changes in the pattern of technology diffusion account for 80% of the Great Income Divergence between rich and poor countries since 1820.

Market Frictions, Technology Adoption
This paper develops an endogenous growth model with labor market matching and technology adoption. While labor market search and entry frictions lengthen technology diffusion, exogenous technology arrival may creatively destruct jobs in the short run. Such interrelationships give rise to multiple equilibria (global and local indeterminacy) under which a small autonomous technological improvemen...
متن کاملKnowledge, Technology Adoption and Financial Innovation
Why are new financial instruments created? Why are they needed and what purpose do they serve? This paper proposes the view that financial development arises as a response to the contractual needs of emerging technologies. Exogenous technological progress generates a demand for new financial instruments in order to share risk or overcome private information, for example. A model of the dynamics...
متن کاملEndogenous Growth, Backstop Technology Adoption and Optimal Jumps
We study a two-phase endogenous growth model in which the adoption of a backstop technology (e.g. solar) yields a sustained supply of essential energy inputs previously obtained from exhaustible resources (e.g. oil). Growth is knowledge-driven and the optimal timing of technology switching is determined by welfare maximization. The optimal path exhibits discrete jumps in endogenous variables: t...
متن کاملFactors Affecting E-Commerce Stages of Growth in Small Chinese Firms in New Zealand: An Analysis of Adoption Motivators and Inhibitors
We investigate an e-commerce stages of growth model in a cross-cultural business context for small Chinese firms in New Zealand. Research findings from 14 case studies show that the Chinese owners/managers of these small firms have a high power distance, and their attitude toward e-commerce technology directly influences their firms’ e-commerce growth process. It was found that the higher the s...
متن کاملTechnology Adoption, Human Capital, and Growth Theory
This paper explores a model in which growth is determined by a combination of human capital and technology adoption. At the heart of the model is the notion of \contiguous knowledge" { the idea that knowledge spreads out a certain distance. Because of this property of knowledge, a developing country can adopt existing technology only when it is su±ciently close to the technological frontier. Th...
